Tourism

  • Heidelberg Castle: The classic visit in Heidelberg. The palace ticket includes the railway up to the mountain, the castle courtyard, the Great Tun, and the German Apothecary Museum. In September, the castle is normally open daily until early evening.
  • Old Bridge and Old Town: The Old Bridge, the riverside, Universitätsplatz, and the streets around the Heiliggeistkirche can be visited easily on foot before or after the symposium.
  • Philosophenweg: A panoramic walking route on the northern side of the Neckar, with views over the Old Town, the river, and the castle. The walk is highly recommended in good weather, but some parts are steep. Inspiration for Tesugaku no michi in Kyoto.
  • Museums and libraries: Depending on your schedule, the Universitätsbibliothek, the Kurpfälzisches Museum, and the university area in the Altstadt are also worth visiting.

Additional note for extended stays

On 5 September, Heidelberg will host the Schlossbeleuchtung (castle illumination), a special evening event with fireworks and increased visitor numbers. If you plan to stay an extra day to attend, we strongly recommend booking accommodation and restaurants in advance due to the unusually high demand.

On the same day, we also plan to organize a voluntary group visit to the city for participants who choose to extend their stay.
